Community is very important to a city. The closer a city feels, the better the city will become. Poverty and crimes rates can drastically decrease if the members of a city all work together and get along. As the City Treasurer of Carson, I firmly believe that it is our duty to give back to our community, in any way that we can, to make it stronger. However, sometimes finding time or ways to give back to the community can be difficult to come by. That’s why I’m compiling a short list of simple ways that you can give back to your community.
Volunteer at a shelter
Do you love animals? Then you might want to consider volunteering your time or money to an animal shelter. Most shelters are constantly looking for volunteers, and there is most certainly always work to be done. While monetary donations are great, volunteering your time is a much better way to assist the shelter. Who knows, at the end of the day, you may even leave with one of the animals to call your own.
Volunteer your knowledge
Are you incredibly knowledgeable in a particular subject? Why not take that knowledge and pass it on to others? Almost every single public school offers some form of after-school training or tutor program. You can call your respective school and ask if they are accepting volunteers. If you are adept at a second language or are so skilled at math that you need to share it with today’s youth, then go out there and become a tutor. It’s an excellent way to build meaningful relationships and foster growth.
Shop at local businesses
Shopping at Walmart or Target is incredibly convenient, but large retailers put smaller, local stores out of business. Create long-lasting friendships with your community members by purchasing their goods and services. If you’re hungry, don’t go to McDonald’s; instead, stop by the pizza place run by your neighbor. If you’re looking to purchase home goods, reconsider that trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond and instead visit the shop in town. Buy shopping locally, you are putting more money into the community and helping others maintain healthy businesses.
Community is the centerpiece of any city, no matter how large or small. Giving back to your community may seem like a daunting task, but it’s truly simpler than it may seem. Hopefully this list inspires you to take action and make your city great.
